When you have experienced water damage in your home or place of business, you will serve yourself well to understand the four (4) classifications of water damage:
Category 1 Water Damage
Category 1 Water Damage or often referred to as “Clean Water” involves a source of water from a clean fresh water supply line. This type of water damage does not pose any threat to humans. Examples of a Category 1 Water Damage or “Clean Water is flooding from broken water supply lines to sinks, bathtubs, showers, sink overflows or appliance malfunctions that involve the water supply line.
Category 2 Water Damage
A Category 2 Water Damage refers to water often called “Grey Water” which will contain a significant amount of chemicals, biological or physical contaminants that can cause discomfort or sickness if a human is exposed to the water. This water will also carry micro organisms and nutrients for micro organisms to grow and multiply. Examples of a Category 2 Water Damage can include toilet bowls overflows with urine (no feces), water discharge from washing machines, bath tubs, sinks and dishwashers or seepage from hydrostatic failure and sump pump failure.
Category 3 Water Damage
A Category 3 Water Damage is also known as “Black Water” and this is the most unsanitary category of water flooding. Black water will contain unsanitary agents, harmful bacteria and fungi which can cause severe discomfort and sickness. Sources of water that create a Category 3 Water Damage are sewage, seawater, rising water from rivers or streams, ground surface water or standing water. It must be noted that a Category 2 or Grey Water situation that is left for too long and not quickly cleaned up can graduate to a Category 3 situation. Toilet back flows from beyond the toilet trap is also considered a black water contamination.
